:: Review ::
This is the second release by this
band, following the apparently critically acclaimed debut "Forever and a Day". One
thing I must say, is that prog metal tends to be a two-state system with me, in the
sense that I either love it or hate it, depending on who is responsible for the
delivery, so I'm not really the best person to compare and contrast this release in
great detail.
Now, although this is not really my cup of tea, I think the music on this release is
actually quite interesting, all things considered. It can best be described as equal
parts Dream Theater and Fates warning, with a dash of Queensryche here and there for
spice. But they tend to borrow their sound from very early Dream Theater, as in
"When Day and Dream Unite", which was their more overtly 80's metal phase, instead
of their current sound.
Everyone plays with the required mix of aplomb and cojones, and Sherinian in
particular really just layers, being tasteful and adding more color than fireworks
to the album. My only big complaint is that Duzan really sounds like a Geoff Tate
clone, which is a major setback for a band trying to carve themselves a niche in a
market already saturated with imitators. Their songs are well-crafted, and the album
is not overly long (both very WELCOME rarities in the world of progmetal), but I
don't see how they can really get past the obvious comparisons that are bound to
haunt them. Most tracks are pretty solid, with the sole exception of "e-Killer",
with that velveetarrific modem sound effect and vocals with just plain scary
mimetism to Tate's.
Overall, this is a pretty decent release, and fans of the genre are well advised to
check them out. It's a professional band, trying hard to get recognition, and
believe me, they do NOT suck! Go to their website or to
www.nightmare-records.com, ask for samples or amplers, or
whatever these people have to offer as freebies, and decide if you'll part with your
hard-earned cash using your EARS, instead of my personal and unavoidably biased
views on this release!
