:: Review ::

Prepare yourself for a journey back to the ancient times. This album is TOTALLY entrenched in epic Nordic folklore. From the two instrumentals that open and close the album, to the other eight tracks in between, BATHORY do not stray from the NORDLAND theme. Is that good or bad your wondering?

Quorthon - Bathory - Nordland IWell that depends on how much of a fan you are. If you are expecting a full on black metal album then you should look elsewhere. This is more of a folksy Nordic tribute album with a few heavy riffs thrown in for good measure. Most tracks center around a single melody that is repeated throughout the song. There are some good riffs for sure, but the repetitiveness is a little too much after a while. For example the number two track "Nordland" is a 9 minute and 20 second epic with the same riff over and over. The song could be 6 minutes long and we would get the point. The songs are solely based in the Nordic tradition with na! ture.  This album is for hardcore Bathory fans and others who want a lesson in Nordic mythology. This one's for you if you appreciate folk-like music.

he production is good, except for the vocals in a few tracks. Musically, the album is engineered well. But it's just not pleasing to listen to over and over, and the tempo is too slow almost allowing the listener to slip into a dream state to awaken in the "Foreverdark Woods". Keep this one for the mellower moments in life, or if you're into renaissance festivals.

6.5 out of 10 keyboards.
