:: Review ::

The
band Kansas needs no introduction. They are one of the defining American Progressive
rock bands of all time. Their latest effort is entitled Device Voice Drum because
everything used to make and record the music is a device, and the only analog or
biological elements of the music are the Voice and Drum.
With very few overdubs,
this effort is a live CD and DVD recorded at the Earthlink Live in Atlanta, Georgia.
For fans interested in seeing the band’s live dynamic captured on film—not video,
but film—I recommend this highly. And for those who’d simply like to hear another
rendering of favorites from this quintessential American prog band, pick this one
up. Each player is in top form, and the ineffable quality of live recordings is
evident on this amazing effort.
To be fair, though, if you don’t have a DVD player
and already own the Kansas “Best of” CDs, this one won’t enlarge your collection
much. Still, it’s a unique and wonderful grouping of Kansas tunes, and worthy of
your shelf space.
9 out of ten Keyboards.
