:: REVIEW ::

Let me try to summarize my first impression of this album: "Holy crap, this is fuckin' awesome!". Repeated listens only showed greater depth and intelligence on this disc, which is truly, along with Rob Sbar's Noesis and the Charles Wright trio's debut CD's, one of the best jazz fusion albums I've heard in a long time.

There are 9 songs on this fine, fine piece of work from these French music meisters, and contrary to most of the albums I get for review that contain any measure of virtuoso musicianship, Onno Ottevanger and company really know how to leave you wanting more.

It is hard for me to single out any piece from the rest, because they all just fit together perfectly in a cohesive whole. I hear many influences, notably the Holdsworth-Bruford collaborations, but nothing here is derivative. The drums are so crisp sounding and expertly performed and recorded I was instantly reminded of Simon Phillips and some of the work he's done with Pete Townshend and The Who in the past. The bass grooves and sets the chordal motion beautifully, leaving plenty of room for the piano and guitar to really put on a disciplined, melodic performance with a perfect mixture of chops and good taste from beginning to end. The trumpet makes me think of Bruford Levin's Upper extremities, but with much more memorable melody and delivery, and the somewhat quirky vocals are used sparingly and to great effect.

I can't say enough good things about this album. It is really that good. This is one of those you simply have to buy if you're in any way interested in fusion. Comes with my highest recommendation! Go visit these fine folks at
www.multimania.com/tumblehome and buy this little gem; it'll be worth every penny.

Rating: 9.5 keyboards (should be 10, but it's not really a prog album and I don't want to hear any crap about that later...)
