Persephone’s Dream :: Opposition
Pittsburgh – a hot bed for
progressive music, well maybe not yet. Pittsburgh based Persephone’s Dream is another
great prog band coming out of the state of Pennsylvania. The group has now formed
into a sextet with the addition of new band mates Kim Finnney on keyboards and
backing vocals and John Tallent on percussion and background vocals. This infusion
has given the group a new expanded phater sound.
This is Persephone’s Dream third album entitled Opposition and it is decidedly more
accomplished then their previous works. I have read all the positive reviews but it
seems everyone is trying to tag this band. This band is a neo progressive rock band
with a bit of ethereal and classical rock fused in. Amen for the good stuff!
Lets start by saying I loved PD’s previous work Moonspell, and I was left wondering
will PD be able to top their last album? “Honestly” I had to listen to opposition
several times; at first it didn’t do anything for me, but like true prog fans I
listened to it again and again. After the third listen it finally hit me full
tilt, I was hooked. This is how good prog albums affect prog fans. Persephone’s
Dream delivers an album that is well written and original. The sound production is
top notch and I love the use of different percussion effects from vibes to bells, as
well as the use of keyboards. While there are some heavy moments in this album like
“Bevel”, Puppetmaster”, and “TV Talk Show”; the group is still very progressive. A
sample of that can be heard on “Agent Of Chaos” and “Storm Chaser”. This is music
that features superb musicianship and great vocals from Karin Nicley. Some of the
tracks are ethereal songs like “Endymion”, “10th Moon” and “Farside Of
Eden”. They are songs that will take you to a place where Persephone’s Dreams
are made. What I like about this group is that they are technically sound and they
feature a vast assortment of instruments that give the listening audience music that
is intricate and complex. The band has come away with a winner and we highly
recommend this album in your CD collection.
Persephone’s Dream could be your dreams come true so go out and support this band
and buy their music!
Prog4you rates this album nine keyboards out of ten.
