IZZ :: Sliver Of A Sun
The beautiful thing about progressive rock, is that there is so much music out
there. For example, I had no idea who Izz was, let alone ever heard of anything from
the band. We ran into the group at the 2001 Nearfest. They were not there to
perform, they were there soliciting people to hear their music. They gave us a copy
to listen to and possibly do a review. Well let me tell you, they should have been
one of the bands performing at Nearfest. The music is that good.
If you don’t have this album, and you don’t know anything about the band, encourage
yourself to buy this album. We think that this album was possibly the best find at
Nearfest. Even though this album was recorded in 1998- it sounded new to us. Izz is
made up of five musicians. Tom Galgano – vocals, piano, and synthesizers, John
Galgano - bass / vocals & electric guitar, Paul Bremner - electric and acoustic
guitar, Brian Coralian – electric and acoustic percussion, and Greg DiMiceli –
acoustic drums. On some of the songs Izz is also helped with lead from vocalist
Danielle Altieri, and background vocals from Michele Salustri.
The record was produced and engineered by Tom Galgano and recorded and mixed by Tom
Galgano and Izz at Underground Studios, NY. From start to finish, this is an
excellent album; excellent musicianship; great vocals and harmonies. Brilliant
lyrics.
A few of the songs show contemporary rock influences with acoustic parts set in. The
tunes include Just a Girl, Lornadoone, Take it Higher, She Walked Out The Door, and
Where I Belong. The more progressive tunes include Endless Calling, I get Lost,
Assurance, Double Days, and Meteor. This is Izz’s first album and it has a feel and
likes of bands like Glass Hammer, Schrodingers cat, Land of Chocolate, and Mr. So &
So.
I’m sure you will enjoy this album as much as we did. We highly recommend it.
