: : Missa Mercuria : :

This is a very complex “concept CD” with the concept being the loss of humanities true soul when we discarded the “gods” and evolved to a monotheistic concept that was totally flawed at its basic core.

It takes the idea of the four natural elements, Earth, Fire, Air, and Water as the true “gods” that were in us all not in some heaven in the sky. Earth and Water are female while Air and Fire are male.

In this concept the natural elements kept the world in balance and by choosing the concept of one God we, as humans have opened the doors to all the evils in the world. Ironically, based on this CD’s concept, all the evils of the world are caused by man and not some singularly evil “Satan”.

Now that I’ve said that part we can just get to the music. Some of you will be familiar with many of the names who participated on this extensive CD. All players are from well known hard rock/metal bands from Germany. Vanden Plas, Silent Force, Pink Cream 69, and Edenbridge. This is a very heady group of players and singers and the music is stunning in its brilliance.

Thankfully the only way you really get the “story” is by reading the extensive letter in the booklet from Mercuria who has come once again from the natural elements of the gods within to try and get humans to change their ways. By this is mean that the lyrics in each song are not so preachy as the letter Mercuria has written to explain why she has returned.

The songs range from straight ahead in your face metal riffing to slow pensive ethereal songs. The song lyrics are not cheesy in anyway regardless of what you think about the concept.

There are several instrumental pieces that set the stage between lyrical passages. The music and playing is extremely good and each song seems to draw you deeper and deeper into the story and concept.

No growling vocals, although one of the female vocalist on one song could probably break a glass with her upper end range.

The Journey to Hades suite will really get to you. It is made up of songs 11 thru 15 and has both dynamite playing and singing with short instrument pieces book ended by powerful lyrics.

All I can say is that this is a head banging, heart thumping, and mind bending musical experience of the finest order. Songs about freedom for all peoples, equal rights for all people (male and female), about the basic sanctity of our sexual power, of false prophets, of lying corporations, of destroying our water, air, and earth, of consumption for the sake of consuming. This CD spoke to me on many levels and it spoke with a clear voice all smothered in musical nirvana. If you like concepts like Into the Electric Castle, then this wonderful bit of ear candy will hit your sweet tooth perfectly.
