With
it’s Atari video game sounding intro, it was hard to tell where this
band is going, but they end up playing sort of a progressive jazz/rock
fusion almost what Weather Report or Mahavanshu Orchestra might have
sounded like if they leaned more towards rock, even adding a metallic
edge.
With the jazz piano prowess of Eric Rissolo, complimented by his synth
work, and the John McLaughlan meets Steve Lukather influenced guitar of
Jay Rusnak, the sub world jazz funk percussion element of Scott Carle,
with Ericksen and Quick providing a rhythmic backbone to the overall
sound, Rock Star Scientist creates a new dimension to the jazz/rock
world, obviously being able to reach out to prog fans. “Brain Check” is
a Chick Corea-meets-Kansas related cut, with “Oblivion” being the
extended heavier piece, both being instrumentals that could easily
provide background music to films.
All in all these guys make more than just a mark within the prog or
jazz/rock world, leaving any boring “new age” or “elevator” factor
behind, exposing their energetic mix of musicianship without being too
much into the jam band scope of things, with music that sounds compose,
but yet has the sporadic feel to it, having the soulful element within
their chops.
