Crazy World hails from Finland, and is a project group made up from musicians from several more or less well-known Finnish bands; the record company's blurb page actually describes Crazy World as a Finnish supergroup. Furthermore the blurb page tells us that this project is about making retro music in the 70's style, with inspiration from the great bands of those times, especially Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, The Who and David Bowie.

Personally; I don't know too much of The Who or David Bowie's outputs, but I certainly can say that Purple as well as Zeppelin has inspired much on this album. And the opening track has even borrowed some licks from Bon Jovi's 20 years old monster hit "Wanted Dead or Alive".

So musical style is well defined; but what are the actual songs like?

Very briefly, you've got three types of tunes on this album:

Ballads: "No White Marble" - okayish tune with Bon Jovi influence. "Poor Alice", a pleasant lighter ballad kinda tune, "Sweet Little Ugly Duckling" another pleasant okayish sounding ballad with a bit of power in it, "Misery Loves Company" a ballad with a bit more character, and a tender and vulnerable feel to it.

Rockers: "Long Hair Wildman Rides Again" a good Deep Purple tune written and performed by someone else, "Out Of Me" an okayish mix of Purple and early hair metal, "Old Tambourine" a driving rocker with a more generic 70's feel to it, "Sölvesborg Afternoon" sort of a mix between Zeppelin and Purple that almost works, "Good Times, Bad Times" a zeppelin cover, well executed as such. The hammond adds character to the tune.

Mood pieces: "Welcome To Crazy World" creates a Deep Purple mood in 30 seconds. "Welcome To Crazy World (slight return)" the same mood piece here drawn out to last for almost two minutes. Doesn't work too well.

All in all this release didn't impress me much; as too many of the songs in my ears were nice - but no more. But for someone heavily into 70's music this record isn't the worst you can add to your collection.

For the curious, check out the tracks "Long Hair Wildman Rides Again", "Old Tambourine", "Good Times, Bad Times" and "Misery Loves Company"
