Prymary is a southern
California based band, and "The Tragedy of Innocence" is their second
release, and their first release for Progrock Records.
Musically we're firmly placed in prog metal country on this release. And
as for so many bands in this genre, the ghost of Dream Theater haunts
Prymary throughout this record. The floating keyboards on top of at
times hard riffing guitars, the high vocals shifting over to effects now
and again, the lighter ballads with synthwork adding emotion and
textures.
What sets this album apart is that it is a concept album through and
through. The music reflects the lyrics and vice versa; and in more ways
than usual the music here mainly seems to serve as a vessel to tell a
story. And as concepts go, the concept and the story here is rather
original, and better executed than on most albums.
The concept: Incest, and the later effects that experience has on the
child that suffered through it. And from what I've read, the story is
rather heavily based on the real life story and thoughts of a person
very close to the band as well; which makes the story all the more
haunting.
Musically, this release does suffer a bit from that strong concept
though. As the music seems to take second place to the story, quite a
few of the songs are a bit weak in themselves. So for anyone interested
in the music only; this is an ok release in my opinion.
But for those into concept albums; and especially those interested in
the specific concept covered on this release; note this release down as
something you gotta check out. The hearts and souls of the lads in the
band are clearly felt throughout here; and even the weaker songs bristle
with strong emotions from everybody involved.
My overall rating here is for the musical impression only; so take that
into account when thinking bout whether or not this album should be on
your purchase list.
