BATHORY Review:

Here we go again. Riding our horse against the wind on the shoreline tinged with blood. Cold ocean waves crash against the jagged rocks. Sword and sea and land and trees surround us. BLAH, BLAH, BLAH! No one cares, except for Quorthon that is. This is the same crap as the Nordland I album (see my pleasant review). Which is very unfortunate since Bathory are a classic band, hailed and revered by many. Not now folks. This could be the soundtrack for some Viking movie, with mystical elements, and a lot of atmosphere. Maybe then it could be better digested. There is much oohing and ahhing throughout, and the horse galloping, wind blowing, and wave-crashing effects are also present again on this second installment. Most of the songs are boring and lame with Quorthon struggling to “sing” over mid to low tempo “music”.

Can I say anything good, hmm, lets see. Some of the tunes are more up-tempo, and more electric than on Nordland I. That’s about it. The album has no real intensity until the 8th and 9th tracks, which are also the last. Song 8, entitled “Flash of the Silver Hammer” is very upbeat, forceful and finally we have some true emotion and meaning that the listener can appreciate. The same goes for song 9, called The Wheel of Sun. We have to sit through this entire album of homesick hell to get two tracks that are somewhat exciting. Too little, too late, Bathory, the album should have started with these two tracks and the rest should have built and expanded upon this type of vibe.

Unless you’re in the Nordland Conservation Society don’t even bother listening. Bathory fans don’t bother; these two albums will ruin your feeling for the band, like what happened for Metallica fans with the Load and Re-Load albums. You’re better off pretending these albums never were released.
I also would like to retract my rating for Nordland I from a 5 (I think) to a 2. I wanted so badly to like these albums that I think it affected my judgment.

3 out of 10.
