Bright Ophidia is a band from Poland that was founded in 1998. They released 2
demos, and 2003’s Coma, which is being reviewed here today. Three of the musicians
are also in the band Dominium. They are listed as a prog-metal band, but this
release is more of a tribute to old school metal with a slight theatrical flare.
Musically, they combine classical, thrash, a spruce of prog, and a bit of punk to
create their sound. The production is above average. The arrangements are somewhat
unique, combining different types of musical concepts. I have no problem at all with
the players. Guitar, drums, bass all played skillfully. In fact, the percussion is so
crisp on some of the tracks I would call it awesome. So horns up to the drummer for
sure. If this album were an instrumental the rating would be much higher. I think
you see where I’m going with this.

I'm going to just come out and say the
vocals are BAD. Nothing against Adam. He is trying, just a bit too hard. The
majority of the album vocally sounds like a pig being slaughtered. Adam’s screams
are more like squeals that are very hard to listen to. There are some “clean” vocals
that are reminiscent of the slower Danzig or Type O Negative vocals. There are also
some punk-like vocals thrown around on the recording. So we have a bit of diversity,
but not enough to save the review. Most of the time we get annoying squealing. YUK!
I am so glad I don’t have to listen to this record again. I feel bad for the
musicians. Straight up, they need to get a new singer or change the vocals
completely, going with a different sound. Being into all types of metal, I love the
growls and the incoherent grunts that you get from some bands. That is strong and
aggressive and powerful. This is weak. The promo sheet compares the “angry” vocals
to that of Phil Anselmo from Pantera and Superjoint Ritual fame. I strongly
disagree. The vocals really can only be compared to that of a squealing pig.
The best part of the record is when it is over. To repeat, the musicians are
talented, the singer does have range and strength, but vocally they are heading down
the wrong path. Hopefully they will change their ways for the future, especially if
they want to sell any records.
