As
I Lay Dying are guitar driven thrashers wearing their hearts on their sleeves. The
band presents with an ear severing twin guitar massacre in basically every track.
Tim’s harshly emotional vocal melodies embody the wide range of feelings expressed
by their lyrics. I listened to this through once without reading the lyrics and it
all flew past me like a speeding car on the freeway. I thought “another thrash-core
band, big deal”. Then I listened again lyrics in hand and was awe struck by the
intense content of their poetry. That’s exactly what their words are poetry, not
just lyrics. Some of the verbiage is only 3 lines long and yet it still expresses
strong meaningful thought and emotion. Recurring themes of love, loss, and
discontent lie beneath the tortured surface of the music and vocals.
Most of the tracks are mid to high tempo, with only two slowing down a bit. The
vocals are dirty, thrashy, and screaming. A few tracks have some high quality clean
background vocals thrown into the mix. The record reminds me of Killswitch Engage
blended with Beyond the Embrace. It’s a sort of organized disorganization. The music
and vocals are all over the place at times, always returning to the initial vibe of
the track.
There is some excellent guitar playing and percussion. As far as vocals go, Tim
definitely can sing (scream that is). My question is, where is the bass? I am sure
Aaron Kennedy’s bass lines are there somewhere, but they are very hard to discern
beneath all the rest of the noise. They need to make the bass more prominent to get
a more solid groove going, and to maybe add a bit of versatility to the song
structures.
Good not Great.
