A.C.T
is a five-piece band from that musical hotbed we call Sweden. There must
be something in the drinking water, because, man there is a lot of great
music coming out of that country - and one of the best is A.C.T. The
first time I heard this band it was something of a surprise as I really
did not know what to expect. If there is such a thing as
progressive-pop, this is it. They have taken influences from other bands
such as: Queen, E.L.O., City Boy, Dream Theater, Saga, 10cc, Abba, and
made it their own. This band is very unique, and I have not heard
anything quite like them.
Vocal harmonies are very important in this music and looking at the band
line-up it should be noted that no fewer than three members share lead
vocal duties. There is also a mini orchestra complimenting the band (The
Acting Orchestra) and they are heard at the very beginning setting the
mood in the short instrumental Outro. Wailings From a Building ups the
tempo with some great guitar riffs and fast tempo changes. The refrain
is irresistible as is the case with much of the album. This song has a
pretty strong E.L.O. feel and is especially enhanced by the use of
violins. Mr. Landlord has a catchy reggae beat that will cause
compulsive toe tapping. Yes, it is that good. With its quirky lyrics
(somewhat reminiscent of 10cc) and great melody we have a real winner.
Again, the violins really add to the orchestral arrangement. There is
also a real tasty guitar solo thrown in. What more could one ask for?
The beginning of Torn by a Phrase has the band showing some guitar
muscle, almost in a Dream Theater vein. Then some lovely acoustic guitar
accompanied by some soft singing really engages the listener. When the
refrain starts we have that great guitar riff happening. Not only is it
fast, but their sense of melody is second to none. Also worth noting are
the background vocals, wonderful stuff.
The heartfelt Ted’s Ballad is a very moving song. It literally sent
shivers down my spine the first time I heard it. Wonderful singing,
violins and some of the nicest piano playing this side of Elton John -
great song. Dance of Mr. Gumble rocks out with a great heavy metal riff
as the guitar takes center stage.
The rest of the songs are equally as good and there are no weak songs on
this disc. You have to hear it for yourself. So there you have it - a
wonderful slice of melodic prog just waiting for a taste. I recommend to
all progressive music lovers to support the band and go out and buy this
cd. You will be glad you did. Personal favourites include: Ted's Ballad,
Dance of Mr. Gumble and Effect.
