WUTHERING HIGHTS : : Metal : :

Canadian thrashers Annihilator are getting close to celebrating their 25th anniversary as a band; and are still going mighty strong. Metal is their 14th full length release, and was released in 2007 in Europe, while the US had to wait until January 2008 to get this one.

Musically this album is very much about old school thrash. Most songs come across as a combination of Anthrax and Metallica as they sounded in 1987; other influences easily detected are Nuclear Assault, Iron Maiden, Rush and Black Sabbath. Whereas the first two influences are major, the last are more of a minor nature though.

To some degree this is a derivative album, as the influences do dominate the listening experience a bit. There are some rather unique elements in the music here; the flowing guitar riffs of Jeff Walters building a wall of sound; the slick but also gritty guitar sound in general; the slight use of progressive elements in most tunes. Still, the influences dominate more than other aspects.

When that is said; the songs here are well crafted, well played, and some really intriguing atmospheres are created. "Haunted" in particular is a brilliant track, and the album as such is a very good release; with "Couple Suicide" and "Downright Dominate" being the only compositions that failed to inspire me.

If you don't mind listening to an album where influences are easily detectable; "Metal" is a release worth checking out; fans of old school thrash in particular should add this one to their list of releases that should be checked out further.

Rating: 8 (out of 10)
