Third
Act is a release by Danish-based band Evil Masquerade, and as the title
suggests it is their third release. It was released in 2006 in Europe,
and in July 2007 the album was released in the US courtesy of Nightmare
Records. This review is based on the European release; and US fans
should be aware that the US release of this album has two bonus tracks
in addition to the tracks on the European version.
Musically Evil Masquerade belongs somewhere in the middle of the genres
neo-classical metal, power metal and prog metal. Their sound have
obvious similarities to the early releases by Yngwie Malmsteen's Rising
Force as well as to prog metal masters Symphony X.
Unlike these bands Evil Masquerade doesn't indulge in unnecessary
soloing though. On this release it is the songs and the moods that are
central; whatever soloing occurs is not overextended or self-indulgent.
The band do like melodrama though, quite a few of the tracks have
dramatic moments and a clear epic atmosphere to them, which fits very
well with the vocal delivery of new singer Apollo - whose voice do have
some operatic qualities to it.
The songs on this release are good ones as well. A couple of fillers can
be found here and there, but mostly the tracks here are strong, power
ballads and fast-paced riffers alike being well written, catchy and well
performed. Overall this is a strong release, worth checking out by
people into bands and genres as mentioned above.
