1918 is an Italian group, with a history going back to the year 2000.
Dopoguerra is their third release, and the second official release of
this group.
Musically they describe their music as inspired by indie rock and
darkwave. Personally I'm not too familiar with those types of music
myself; but guess that description is more or less fitting.
The guitars are the central instrument in all songs here, where fast
paced riffing with clean as well as distorted guitar sometimes sets the
foundation for melodic overlays from the other guitar, and partly forms
a melody line of its own. Usually a song starts out relatively mellow
with clean guitars, and then the distorted guitar riffs are added to the
tune a bit into the song.
Drums and bass keeps the pace of the song itself, and the vocals are
clean and melodic.
Personally I would say that U2 probably is a major inspiration for this
band, as the mood of the songs as well as the guitar playing here are
much in the same vein as classic U2; albeit a bit on the heavier side.
Small melodic guitar inputs in many songs here remind me a bit of an
obscure group called Hinterland as well; whereas the general mood is a
bit similar to what Norwegian group Madrugada had a few years back -
heavy on the melancholy.
What is mostly lacking on this release are good songs though. Many of
the songs are way too similar in sound and structure; and although all
songs are pleasant listens; few really manages to grab your attention.
The songs sound too generic basically, and somewhat lacking of an
identity of their own.
None of the songs are bad though; this release just lacks the really
good songs that will set it apart from other releases.
Personal favorites: Rachel, Lomo.
