Viva Carlos is one in a number of tribute releases courtesy of Jeff
Richman. Now, tribute albums isn't always a good thing. Too many of them
seems to be put together mainly to either generate fast money for a
record label, or to be a way of introducing unknown bands to a larger
audience by letting them play well known music on a tribute album bound
to be picked up by hardcore fans of the artist the album is a tribute
for.
The end result is way too often a lackluster release without any major
musical or artistic value as such.
In this case though, this project has been planned and executed in a way
that has produced an interesting end result with musical as well as
artistic value. And as long as that is the case, whatever is the
motivation for this project is not of great importance.
The goal of this project has clearly been to showcase how different
guitar players techniques and styles will flavour the music Santana has
played over the years. To insure that each guitarist will be showcased
in the best possible way, the project managers here has put together a
fixed backing band, so that each guitar player can explore the songs
from an identical musical universe.
And the 10 guitar players here really add to Santana's music; as well as
the backing band.
Whereas Santana and his backing band both have an at times very free
flowing feel to the songs they play, on this release the music is more
structured and planned, leaving more space for the individual
instruments to be heard as well as leaving more playground for the
guitar soloing and melodies. Which makes the music more accessible to
those of us without a Latin cultural background.
The differences in styles from the 10 solo guitarists then adds distinct
flavouring to each of the tunes here; thus really infusing these well
known tunes with new life and added artistic and musical value.
The end result is a strong release, and highly recommended for everyone
that like Santana. In addition, I'd say that this album will probably be
the best starting point for someone that wants to start exploring
Santana's musical universe, as this record gives a good idea of his
general style of music as well as being more accessible and listenable
than most of Santana's own releases. Giving a "newbie" a feel and
understanding of Santana's music that may be an advantage to have before
exploring Santana's own recordings.
