 This
album is about a fourth-dimensional war-mongering nerd whose only form
of appeasement is earth’s finest cup of coffee. When presented with the
roasted bean, he goes on a tirade calling upon the forces of the planet-smasher
and the omni-dimensional creator. It’s an odd tale but somebody had to
do it, and why not Devin Townsend?
Musically, it’s a lot like his prior releases; so no reason not to go
there. Conceptually, it’s in a whole new universe beyond anything he or
anybody else has done. It’s closer to Frito-Lay Funyuns than cheese
curds in the sense that it’s a strange combination that actually works
due to it zesty crunch. Still, some will get intestinal cramping from
the intolerance to its gut-busting enzymes.
Keep an open mind and check it out. Among mean riffs, sophisticated
licks, and quarrelsome quirks, Ziltoid The Omniscient is a humorous
storyline that would make Douglas Adams ruminate and state, “Why didn’t
I think of that first?”
Devin Townsend beat him to the punch and even one-upped himself by
taking us in a direction most fans would have never expected – not in a
million light years.
