Frankly Magna Carta stole my dream with this one. Years ago I fantasized about
having a drum off if you will. Where my favorite drummers like Neil Pert, Scott
Rockenfield, Alan White, Mike Portnoy, Scott Travis and Tommy Lee would get together
and do a dual to the death kind of drum off.
One drummer does his best then is followed by another attempting to top what had
just been heard. Other “players” would be allowed like guitars, bass and maybe a
little keyboards but the main focus would be just the drums.
Well with this release Magna Carta has come close to giving me what I wanted. My
only complaint? Too many drummers I have not heard of. That said, so what? This is a
darn good example of various rock and jazz drumming styles. I mean Terry Bozzio,
Bill Bruford and Rod Morgenstein alone are worth the price of admission to this CD.
The CD starts off with Bozzio just ripping along with a song called “A glimpse into
a Deeply Disturbed Mind”. Like wow. That’s followed by the much more jazzy Beelzebub
by Bill Bruford.
You get a lot of good drumming, some great drumming and in a few cases some drumming
that is just so so.
Overall this is a very listenable CD even though I find myself hitting the button to
skip certain tracks. I would have preferred a more drummer against drummer format
where they let it all out as this CD is more songs with drumming than an attempt to
show case the intricate skills of the drummers used on the CD. Bottom line, this is
an okay CD with a wide range of drumming styles that if you simply care about drums
should fit you bill nicely.
