JACK YELLO : : Review : :

JACK YELLO is a neo-progressive rock band hailing from Düsseldorf, Germany and Heemskerk, Holland. The band is German, but the management is Dutch. They were formed in 2000 out of several other German bands, including DARIUS, Avalanche and Jagiello. Their first CD, the concept album "Thorns of Anger" was recorded between December 2001 and February 2003 and as credited in the liner notes “without any samplers or sequenzers.” The band promises “past epochs, classical elementaries and sharp guitar riffs.” The “past epochs” implies strangeness, irregularity and extravagance. They certainly live up to the challenge.

This band plays very high energy music drawing their melodic style from influences ranging from Marillion, Arena, Dream Theater, and even AOR-bands like Journey, Saga and Deep Purple. Their music would best be described as melodic prog metal. The vocals are in English with a fairly heavy accent that might be better served if sung in German. But the emotions in the lyrics come through even in English. They can be compared to Fish-era Marillion. The music is a mix of heavier metal with some acoustic parts mixed in for good balance. The standard prog metal guitar riffs/flourishes are there to satisfy fans of this style of music.

The production of the CD is fantastic with the softer, more melodic parts a great break from the harder moments. The music never becomes tiring as some prog metal CD’s can. The CD is a great debut from a band that took it’s time getting their style just how they wanted it. It has definitely paid off.
