Celtic Frost. Legendary group from Switzerland. Inventors of Avant-Garde
metal, godfathers of modern black metal and goth metal. Innovators and
inspirations for countless of artists in the metal community and beyond.
What do they sound like after a 14 year long hiatus? Quite good,
actually.
For those unfamiliar with this band; a bit about the music. On this
release, we're talking slow to midtempo metal of the brutal variety,
deceptively primitive sounding at times. The soundscape is dominated by
the electric guitar, extremely heavy guitar sound with lots of
distortion; but unlike most extreme metal sounds with a "warm" and
organic sound too it. Massive drums and solid, heavy bass guitar adds to
the heaviness.
And the soundscape is enhanced with french horns and cellos on some
tracks, synths on others, and the odd choir making an appearance as
well.
Vocally there's no monster growling anywhere, main vocalist Fischer has
a talklike vocal style; but also do some singing on a couple of tracks.
The moods conveyed are of the darkest variety. It's like an extended
journey through Mordor, depressive, oppressive and a sense that all hope
is lost seeping through all the tracks. On the epic track "Synagoga
Satanae", there's no epic story of the satanic church at war (as could
be expected), instead it's more like a story telling of a common
gathering ground for people without hope - having lost the ability to
believe in good. Even on the all-classical last track Winter, the
feeling of bleakness and the absence of hope is the most noticeable
moods conveyed.

As the
descriptions above should tell; this is not music for the masses. Music
like this will never get heavy rotation on MTV, neither will it ever top
the Billboard charts.
But if you're into the heavier side of metal, or you're curious as to
what extreme metal sounds like, this release is worth checking out.
Track recommendations: "Drown In Ashes" - a synthbased slow song with
male/female vocals, "Progeny" - brutal and heavy track with very good
examples of tempo changes, "Synagoga Satane" - a close to 15 minutes
long journey through bleakness and hopelessness.
