IV Luna formed in Rome in 1994. They started out called Neriene. The
following year the band changed their name to IV Luna (which means
fourth day of crescent moon). BJ left the band in 2005 and Giacomo
became their new bass player. D’incanto is their second cd. All lyrics
are in Italian.
“Allucinazioni” starts off the album with a very short ambient section
that quickly breaks into the heavy guitar riffs. This is an instrumental
which is quite interesting. There is a hint of Middle Eastern melody and
reminds me a little of Led Zeppelin (think “Kashmir”). This song also
boasts some very good bass by Andrea Caminiti. The next song is guitar
orientated and starts off with some interesting speaker separation of
the guitar. This is a pretty standard rock song with the vocalist
sounding somewhat like Geddy Lee (minus the English lyrics of course).
Again I hear a bit of a Zeppelin influence. They slow things down a bit
with the third song “il Dono di Efesto” which then breaks into almost
speed metal riffage, then slows down once again. I must say this song
has yet to grow on me. Perhaps it is the lack of melody. While there is
some interesting guitar work the song just does not do much for me.
Next we have “Dictator Media” which starts off with some distorted
vocals and a standard heavy metal guitar riff. The song does have some
nice melodic guitar but it takes about three minutes to get there. Not a
bad song, but not great either.
“A Piedi Nudi” starts off with some beautiful acoustic guitar and some
nice soft singing from Miki Chessa. Here he gives quite an emotional
performance and the vocals of Monica Tuzia compliment his quite nicely.
This is one of the strongest songs on the album. This cannot be said of
the next song “Petali di Cenere” where the vocalist starts off
screaming. This song does boast some nice guitar work but it is not
enough to catch my full attention.
“Ultima eco” starts out with a Black Sabbath guitar riff, but ultimately
is not that interesting. Again, it is not a bad song but one it does not
hold my interest. Basically, another standard heavy rock song.
“Isterica Realta” starts out with black metal vocals and heavy guitar.
Do not get me wrong - I am a huge fan of Opeth - but this does not work
very well.
So there you have it. While I did not hate this album there was not much
there that was able to hold my attention. Perhaps it was the lack of
keyboards and orchestration. I happen to like melody with my prog and
this album just could not cut it. If you are looking for a standard rock
album with some pretty good guitar and can get past the Italian vocals
this might be an album for you. Remember, this is just my opinion.
