STEREOKIMONO

: : REVIEW : :

A fairytale, a bad dream, a psychedelic experience.....all these and more can be found inside this wonderment of music by an Italian rock band called StereoKimono.  The CD subtitled "Psycophonic Oblique Rock" intrigues the mind and leaves the listener ready to find a hidden meaning, a truth. With each listen, I seem to come to a different conclusion as to what is really at the heart of each song.  It is in essence a new experience every time.

StereoKimono

Edgy, yet very new-agey, this eclectic mix of storytelling through soundeffect, as well as instrumentation,  is compelling and emotional. Since there are no true vocals throughout, imagination must come into play, more so than any other instrumental artists that I have enjoyed. These tracks are more than just songs, they are epic adventures. And I must say, considering how lengthy some of them are, "Phileas Fogg  " being the longest, it is almost like hearing a novel.  I do feel that this was the intention of this very talented group of musicians. For those non-imaginative types, I would suggest that this isn't the choice for you, although a "cheat sheet" of sorts is included.  It entails this groups version or intended meaning behind each composition. I myself did not check this out until after drawing my own conclusions, so as not to influence or "ruin" my experience with this music.  I wanted to see where it would take me, and let me tell you, it was a trip and a half!!!!!

"Concerto N. 1 Per Pianoforte E Sgabello" contained discord and was dissonant, almost disturbing. It was classically reminiscent starting off, then jumped into a Jazzy feel. I felt an inner battle between musical genres that settled into one cool song. " Per Vederlo Devi Chiudere Gli Occhi" reminded me of a "Twilight Zone" episode, and " Apoteotico" sounded like it belonged to the "X-Files".  Maybe they watch a lot of T.V. ?????  Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed them both, they are imaginative and reach into the soul.  On the lighter side, track 3 also reminded me of a striptease, but again, that's just me and I am sure another listener might get something completely different out of it.

That is the beauty of this band, it is in the eye of the beholder.  Enjoyable, yes.  For everyone, NO.  For the adventurer at heart, definitely.  And next time you're getting a professional massage, play it, it works!

I gave this a 7 out of 10
