:: Review ::
On Kaloomith, Mohodisco create progressive, ambient soundscapes. Rich and evolving
synthesized tones are combined with fusion style guitar and drums to great effect.
Mohodisco is essentially a one-man band, masterminded by Bruce White. Bruce is an
adept guitarist and keyboardist. His guitar playing and tone remind me at times of
Alex Lifeson, circa Grace Under Pressure, or Power Windows. According to the liner
notes, Bruce not only composed and performed the music; he also mixed and mastered
the album. This can be a recipe for disaster in the hands of a less talented
musician, but Bruce is up to the task. His composition, performance, and recording
skills are considerable.

Guest musicians contribute
additional depth and color to the album. I especially like Mark Cobb’s drum
performances. Check out the opening tune, “Praxis” or track two, “Our Paths Are
Sonic Waves”. High caliber drumming in the style of Steve Gadd, Mike Portnoy, Omar
Hakim and the like. Mark Cobb knows his way around the drum kit! His high-hat work
in particular is stellar.
The song writing style on Kaloomith doesn’t always follow the standard verse, chorus
structure heard in much of modern music. Instead the songs are based on grooves
which evolve over the course of the composition. This took me awhile to get used to.
However, after I let go of my need to find structure in the songs, I was able to
enjoy them. I think Bruce expanded my mind a little!
Mohodisco’s music on this album has a movie quality. It has very modern, up to date
sounds—the synths in particular. I can easily imagine Bruce doing soundtrack work.
What I especially like about this album, is the juxtaposition of progressive/fusion
drums and guitars with cutting edge electronic sounds. Bruce has this combination
figured out, and he works it wonderfully.
This is a very good sounding record.
Rating: 8.5 out of 10 Keyboards.
