Wow! You never know what’s going to
show up on DVD these days. I was completely surprised to see this DVD
pop up. Who’d ever think there would be a Collage concert
released…especially in NTSC format! Well, here it is! If you’re a
Collage fan, you are going to love this. All 240 minutes of it. Sadly,
this is the closest you’re going to get to the band as they have
disbanded, at least for now. Wojtek, Robert and Krzysiek went on to form
Satellite, a similar sounding band that has released two terrific albums
so far. Their latest, Evening Games, gets my vote for album of the year
so far, but it’s still early in the year.
Collage released their first album in 1990 followed by five more, the
last (Safe) in 1996. I discovered them in 1997 by sampling Safe at a
record convention in Philadelphia. Their neo symphonic sound was instant
ear-candy for me. Now this DVD is a concoction of various material. The
main concert is professionally shot, utilizing multiple cameras and the
transitions of the shots are nicely done. The sound is exceptionally
good, having been encoded in DD 5.1 surround. The mix is right on the
money too. Obviously, the entire footage was recorded in Europe’s PAL
format, but the transition to NTSC is nice, lacking the flicker often
found in poorer conversion attempts I have seen from other European
concert DVDs. The performance is energetic and heartfelt. The colors are
vibrant and the lighting system operator does a nice job of controlling
the ambience of the performance. It’s impossible to single out any of
these musicians as outstanding in their performance. All of these
players are masters of their perspective instruments.
You drummers out there are going to study this one closely.
There are four studio videos, which are interesting, but lacking clarity
in picture quality. No complaints about the sound here. The second,
Lovely Day has some neat lighting effects. The last video, Midnight
Flyer is shot in black & white and may have been the band’s first ever
video from the look of it.
There are two bootleg videos. One is a single track, God, shot with a
single camcorder in Warsaw in 1995. Despite the amateur technique, the
picture and sound is surprisingly good. The second is footage of seven
songs, bootlegged in Holland. This footage is very amateurish in quality
and there is a lot of crowd chatter in the background. After all, it is
a bootleg and a nice item to have all the same.
To top it off, there are some tasty extras included, such as interviews,
a biography, discography, photos and desktop wallpaper for your
computer. Talking about getting your money’s worth! Even the case has
nice cover art. To top it off, this DVD was manufactured in Oaks,
Pennsylvania, just a stone’s throw from this author’s home.
Due to the glutinous amount of material on this DVD and the great
production and performance given in the official concert footage, this
writer gives this one:
