The January Tree

I’ve been a Devon Graves fan for some time. His work with an obscure neo-prog styled band named Unicorn was my first experience with Mr. Graves’ seriously delicious musical work. He then moved on to a band named Psychotic Waltz. From that band came the first Dead Soul Tribe CD in 2002 which this reviewer hailed as a brilliant example of what progressive metal should sound like.

Time warp to 2005 and I am given this 2004 release by Dead Soul Tribe to review and man oh man is this a great CD.

“The January Tree” is probably a lot more toward the “metal” than the progressive side when compared to the first two Dead Soul Tribe releases and I find that extremely positive.

Yet, no matter how you try to slice it, this music has a strong progressive edge to it. Musically the listener is given a feast of delectable music that at one time is all crunchy and powerful then just as quickly it is pensive and introspective.

The one thing that truly sets Dead Soul Tribe apart is Devon’s vocals and Moustafa’s drumming. The vocals on all Dead Soul Tribe CD’s and especially this one are soul piercing and though provoking. Devon sings in a lyrically pleasing style that allows the listener to really grab hold of the lyrics and wash themselves in the clarity or point of view the song is trying to purvey.

Then, add to this Moustafa’s drum work. Unlike the guitar, bass, and keys, which are more than up to the task, the drum line in each song shows how drums can be a lead instrument without being in your face And over the top. You hear little things that are often missing from a metal drummer’s portfolio. One listen will explain exactly what I mean.

All in all I really love this CD. It is a rock CD with all the fantastic flourishes that make prog metal all warm and fuzzy for me. If I had heard this CD in 2004 it would have surely made my top ten of the entire year.

If you buy this CD and it is NOT one of your top ten at least in the metal vein style of progressive rock music, I’ll buy it from you and replace it with the CD of your choice. I’m that convinced you will like this CD. Of course if metal music is not your thing then maybe you best take your musical vitamins somewhere else.
