WUTHERING HIGHTS : : Entertaining Thanatos : :

With a title like “Entertaining Thanatos” (Thanatos was the Greek god of death and the word Thanatos was used by Freud to represent the death instinct which signals the desire to give up the struggle of life) you expect it to be pretty heavy shit.

With the opening song “Socrates” the listener is caught up in a conversation with the great philosopher as he is asked how he stared down the angel of death. A conversation of wonder about his fears or concerns knowing death was upon him.

The thing you hear from the first note is that Metaphor has a strong Genesis influence. You hear a good bit of musical references to The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway but no Gabriel-esque vocals. And while lyrically this opening song may at some level be disturbing, the question it raises is one we all should think about at least at some point in our life.

This musical “feel” of TLLDoB stays throughout the entire CD. This is not a bad thing, and in fact keeps the entire CD tied together. But this is a dark CD. The theme—death—permeates each song and does tend to keep the listener in a dark cloud. Musically the players are very good and they warp their own version of that specific Genesis sound into a tool seemingly built out of space and time just for them.

Have I mentioned that this CD is dark? Musically intriguing, but lyrically dark. The guys in Metaphor did a great job on combining the two.
