Before I get started I’m saying this. In the area of melodic, symphonic
and progressive rock music this is my #1 for 2005, unfortunately it was
actually released in 2004.
You know what music really is? It really is about finding the REALLY
GOOD and telling other people about it. The “mainstream music biz” tells
us everyday what we are suppose to like but I’m here to tell you that
unless you have bitten of the fruit of RAK then you have not tasted the
virginal progressive flavor that is growing from Europe and is manifest
in RAK.
I listen to and review MANY CD’s. This initial release by RAK is totally
brilliant in the vein (dare I say it) of Spock’s Beard’s first,
Marillion’s first, my God even LP’s like Genesis’s Foxtrot.
As a reviewer, even after many listens, not that it took me “many
listens” to get it, in fact I got it from the first listen but it is
impossible to define this music. It is brilliant. It is of course prog
but it is more. It has a different feel, a different sound. All the
while there is not one note that does not FIT.
Brothers and sisters you MUST own this CD. These guys are not playing
games and they make no musical bones about it.
At some level they remind one of bands like SB, even TFK, and at times
bands in the more ‘prog metal’ side of the spectrum… BUT, see the
problem is they are totally on their own.
Musically they walk the RAK walk and talk the RAK talk. This is not your
daddy’s progressive rock my friends. Maybe it’s not good to be listening
to the band as you review it, then of course maybe it is!
They are trying to tell two different stories in this CD. One is the
wonderful journey of the Monarch Butterfly, of course in both music and
words. The second story is the journey of a girl who as part of her life
is forced to CHANGE to SURVIVE. The symbolism is not lost on me. My
friends, this is incredible music.
Look folks, in all ways this is one of the most melodic, symphonic and
progressive CD’s I’ve heard this far in 2005. It gets my top honors.
As a post script, the artwork on this CD is EXCEPTIONAL. You must see it
to believe it. Seriously
Rating: 9.9 of 10 (as much as I wanted to, nothing gets a 10)
