Encompass hails from Virginia, USA, and were formed and disbanded in
2001, and then reformed again in 2004. This is their first release,
described as both a demo and a debut CD on the bands homepage(s).
Plural, as Encompass as so many other artists do have a MySpace site as
well as an official homepage.
Musically, the group still hasn't found out quite what they want to
sound like, or it may just be that they do not want to specialize in one
specific musical segment. Influences can clearly be heard though; early
80's Rush as well as early 90's Dream Theater influences are not too
difficult to spot here.
But when that is said, the music of Encompass doesn't come across as
very much in the prog metal vein on this release. The prog metal touches
to their music is more of the kind you'll find in prog metal epic
ballads - lots of mood, heavy on the synth, and with the occasional
bursts of mood-inducing riffing.
Apart from abovementioned influences, there's also small touches of
fusion in the soundscapes on this release; at times creating unique
soundscapes.

As for the individual
songs here, they all come across as, well, nice. After listening through
this record some times nothing here has made a lasting impression,
neither positively or negatively. It's nice and okay music, but average.
The production probably has something to say regarding that; as I
believe a few of the tracks would make a greater impact with better
production.
When that is said, this is a self released album, the guys can play -
and I get a feeling that they are an above average live act. So check
them out if they play live near you, buy the album if you want to
support a new and developing band - or if you have the need to get new
music in the borderland between art rock and prog metal.
Special mention to the last track on the album - a "hidden" track with
funny, tongue in cheek hip hop.
