Marking Time : :
Fluttr Effect hails from the United States, and with "Marking Time" they
have unleashed their second attack on stereotypical rock releases.
Attack in the sense that Fluttr Effect has a clear intent on challenging
the ordinary, and expanding their own as well as their listeners musical
boundaries.
There's hardly anything that is ordinary on this release. The songs here
go all over the place, but only rarely veers into anything close to what
most rock groups - or any other groups - release today.
The cello is a dominant fixture in most songs here, and the percussion
work gets highlighted now and again as well, even for soloing. The
guitars are used both as acoustic, plain rock and metal guitars - and
just as often for effect as for delivering melodies and riffs. Rhythms
are often jazzy, but can take a left turn into metal territories as well
when suitable.
Song structure...no, I won't even go there. From ordinary to highly
experimental; nuff said.
The song moods here are often of the darker variety. Generally, most
songs have a dark atmosphere, with eerie and creepy atmospheres in many
tracks as well. A general summary of musical moods here would be "a
soundtrack for your nightmares".

Musical styles on this
release is a highly eclectic theme as well. Most songs are highly
experimental, but general styles go from almost folky to prog metal. If
you can imagine a mix of Bjork and King Crimson at their most
adventurous; the end result wouldn't be too far from this release
musically I think.
The most important thing is though if this works out or not. And in this
case my opinion is a clear yes. The opening track is a rather weak
affair, but after that this release grows into a very interesting affair
indeed. Lots of captivating tracks that'll keep you intently listening.
But when that is said, this is not a CD for the average Joe. The nature
of the music and the songs are highly experimental. Thus this release is
a taxing listen, demanding concentrated listening. As background music
this release is actually rather annoying.
