Sudakow is a Los Angeles based musician, with the electric violin as his
specialty. Green is his first solo album.
Musically, placing Sudakow on a musical map is hard. There's not too
many electric violin players around; and the one I'm familiar with
previously (Cyndee Lee Rule) plays her instrument in quite a different
manner. A general description of the music offered here is that it is
psychedelic in nature, the violin at times having an extreme amount of
distortion; producing a rough sound and creating a hard and extremely
masculine soundscape. You might say that the music has a high amount of
testosterone.
As for the individual songs, opening track Black is the highlight for
me. Sludgy and industrial sounding, the dark soundscape creates an
eerie, creepy feel that creates tension and nerve throughout the song.
The tracks Purple, Orange and Green all have their moments as well. The
industrial feel isn't present in these tracks at all, but all the songs
have parts with a very interesting sound and atmosphere. All of them
also have parts that I personally feel should have been shortened or
excluded - the last minute or so of Purple, the mid section of Orange
and the opening part of Green all take away rather than add to the song
in my opinion.
Red is the big track on this record, 10 minutes of frenzied and taxing
psychedelic playing; thankfully with some breaks along the way. Even so,
that song became too taxing a listen for my ears. Fans of fusion and
experimental psychedelic rock should like that one quite well though.
Blue is the final track on the album, where synth, electronic beats and
careful violin playing creates an interesting soundscape; and the second
best track on the album in my opinion.
All in all I sadly can't give this release a high rating. With some
editing in tracks as mentioned above; the album would have suited my
personal taste better - and I do like the overall sound Sudakow is
implementing here as well. This release will be marked down as promising
by me, and I'm looking forward to hear more from this excellent musician
in the future.
