Kopecky is a trio consisting of the brothers Joe, William and Paul
Kopecky; and "Blood" is the fifth release from this Wisconsin-based
group.
Musically they
play a fusion tinged form of instrumental hard rock/metal, with lots of
complex elements. The structure of their songs are fusion-based in the
manner of playing and repeating themes with lesser or greater
variations, as well as having smaller sections of improvisation in many
of their songs. The soundscapes as such are more hard rock and metal
based though, with lots of riffing, guitar solos and an extensive use of
distorted guitar and bass sounds.
As for musical
similarities, I'm kind of reminded of McGill/Manring/Stevens here; at
least when it comes to song structures. The music as such is rather
unique though, with dark, eerie and at times sinister sounding
soundscapes.
When it comes to
the songs on this release, I got an unusual experience. The soundscapes
here, the moods and the atmospheres - I love them. The eerie and creepy
dark moods are just my kind of thing, the dark and at times evil
sounding guitar is a sound I have liked for decades; the same goes for
the bass guitar when it takes a left turn towards the deeper bowels of
hell.
But the songs as
such doesn't work for me.
There's too much
repetition, too little movement. It is as if the songs move an inch
forward, and then stop for a couple of minutes to try to describe every
minute detail at that place, before slowly moving forwards another inch.
Whatever moods and atmospheres are presented gets killed off by lack of
pace, tension and movement.

when that is said,
these guys are more than competent musicians, and if repetitions and
variations of themes is of interest to you, this album will be a killer.
Especially if you like dark and at times brutal music and hard
rock/metal guitars and soundscapes.
But for those who,
like me, have limits as to just how many times a theme can be repeated
before the tension in a song is killed off, this release is of marginal
interest.
Recommended track:
Windows - one of the few tracks where, after some minutes, you'll find
elements maintaining a sense of movement and tension.
