Darkthrone, Mighty Darkthrone! Darkthrone, Mighty Darkthrone! Come on shout it with
me. In the days of uber-production, keyboards, and complex arrangements, it amazes
me that something so simple can be so great. This is it folks, birthed from the
creators and purveyors of Norwegian Black Metal. Still as pure and raw as it was
“back in the day”. Mindset intact, nothing has changed. Except for the fact that
with age comes greater wisdom, or ignorance. Pick your poison.
The music begins solitary and sloooooow. A single guitar, with piercing distorted
notes, creating, forming something magnificent out of the darkness. In comes the
bass churning in the background. For a moment the guitar and bass exist alone in
space, then the drums join the pair. Continuously growing, establishing the vibe,
producing the entity that is Darkthrone. The vocals spew outward from the music.
Clever, clever, witty lyrics are growled and crunched and chewed upon by Nocturno
Culto. Thus we embark on our 38-minute hellride to the core.
This album in true Darkthrone style was recorded in 26 hours. Never letting up
Darkthrone eviscerate the seven tracks. No BS, just Black Metal. The pair knows what
they are doing. They don’t have to or want to waste time doing anything else. They
are not trying to change with the times or re-invent themselves to appeal to more
people. They really don’t care about any of that, they just wander on their soulside
journey and put out the music that is in their black souls and minds. Its truly
genius.
PURE metal distorted riffs combined with the eloquent pummeling of the drums by
Fenriz engage the listener. Each song is an anthem for the legacy. The lyrics are
demonically intelligent, and if you look hard enough, humorous (black comedy, of
course). The songs are all fantastic. The riffs are evil, and the percussion is sure
to get the neck snapping. I feel jubilation after listening to the recording. I
can’t wait for the next album to spawn. I want to get my hands on as much of their
previous stuff as possible. This is what its all about. If you’re into the black
metal scene, then you probably already have this album and your black heart beats a
bit faster now that it is upon this earth. Any true metal head should appreciate the
who’s and the what’s that make this one a must have.
10 out of 10.
