: : REVIEW : :
I first heard Finisterre at their Prog Day 1998 appearance. What a total pleasure
and enlightening experience. I had always considered myself a well-rounded prog rock
lover but in fact I was not. I somehow had been completely unaware of the mountain
of great progressive rock Italy had to hold. Of course I knew of PFM and Banco, but
beyond that I had no clue. So finding Finisterre was a dream come true.
This CD was released after their Prog Day appearance and only now came to me. Where
do I start in describing this music. This is symphonic prog at the very top of the
style. Strong in all areas. Layer upon layer of musical washes that just beg to be
played over and over. As I’ve penned before, listening to this CD is like opening a
cornucopia of light, being sold as music. An auditory treat so fine that your mind
allows your eyes to see each note as if a musical picture.
The music on this CD evokes in the listener a warmth, a feeling of peace wrapped in
a musical cloke of sound. At times the songs are almost melancholy, almost bordering
on sadness yet each song always leads the listener back to a brighter spot.
The title song “In Ogni Luogo” is the only one of two songs on this CD with any
lyrics. It is sung in Italian. The other is “Continuita’ dilaraneltempo” and is sung
in English. The most erotic female vocalist sings both. This is pure Italian passion
and emotion. Much like driving a Ferrari through the twisty roads along the Italian
Riviera.
The music on this CD flows like a river. It gives life to both the power of music
and the power of humankind. The music ranges from bombastic to mellow. From soft to
hard from mild to wild. You have flute, violin, and sax all blended together in
familiar but very different ways.
This is symphonic prog at its finest. This is not a rock and roll CD. This CD thanks
the roots of progressive rock. Influences? Well of course you will hear early
Genesis but you will also hear Pink Floyd, some of the softer parts of Kansas, even
the some of the more ‘out there’ parts of early King Crimson.
To you the Reader, this music, this artistry, the caliber of the players on this CD
just goes to prove that the Italians put all of themselves into whatever they do and
in so doing load the entire thing with deep emotion and sensual passion. This is a
CD for people who do not like prog music. However, if you ARE a fan of melodic,
symphonic, progressive rock music then will be beside yourself with awe at just how
really good the entire CD truly is.
From the opening notes to the raucous conclusion this wonderful CD takes the
listener on a fantastic journey through a musical soundscape that simply leaves you
wanting more and more. A CD where you find yourself awakening your own spirit.
Seriously, a CD with the quality and overall depth of feeling found within the songs
on this disc are extremely rare.
Buy this CD, glorify in this CD, we are blessed to have artists that can create such
music in our lives.
