Using all types of midi instrumentation to create many different guitar sounds, Charles Brown utilizes all those options with Thru the Flames. Regardless, he is a virtuoso guitarist and might not generally need such technology to enhance his creativity, but what the hell, right.

Simulating all types of synths (remember the sounds on Judas Priest’s Turbo record) and even horns at times with his gear, playing subdued acoustic lines, and playing that lyrical stance as an instrumental guitarist would, using all types of amplifier sounds, Thru the Flames marks a heavier stance for progressive metal/fusion guitar.

CHARLES BROWNOpening up with the straight-ahead metal track, “Rising of the New Moon,” with “Vertical Ascension” and “Radiation Zone” among others following that same path complimenting the progressive endurance of cuts like “A Journey in Time” and “Winds of Eolus” with the guitar synth making it’s mark; not to mention the minstrel guitar within the dark “Absolute Zero” the emotional; ballad of “The Gates of Mists” and the acoustic track that closes the record “The Sunlight Never Dies,” all showcasing Browns diversity as a guitarist, playing melodic, singing guitar lines.

Thru the Flames proves that Brown has the knack for inventing himself as both a synth and well, “no-synth” guitarist as well as showing strengths as a songwriter as well.

6 out of 10 stars.
