From the very first listen, this CD drew me into it like a moth to a flame. Very
moody music, even melancholy in parts.
It was clear in the first two tracks, Greyroom and Hesitating in the Foyer that this
young group of proggers from Sweden had listened many times to Genesis’s “The Lamb
Lies Down on Broadway” but they are so much more than another “sounds like” band.
For in no way do they sound like anyone other than themselves.
Even their influences, while obvious at times, are not worn on their sleeves like
some badge of honor. No, Liquid Scarlet weave a musical web, a hint at things you
may have heard but in reality, in the bright light of day the music is theirs and
theirs alone.
This is most noticeable on track three “Citta Nuova” where they start with a moody
almost pouting sound that moves through a series of anti-tonal bridges to settle
down in a slightly up tempo keyboard laden onslaught seemingly wrapping the listener
in a dark robe of confusion and fear. Haunting keyboards that remind you of
something from Abby Road then a clear concise guitar fills in the musical soundscape.
Lyrically these guys hit my buttons as well. Citta Nuova appears to be a song about
the rise of the machines and the downfall of man. Lines like “All the free are
marching, and they don’t know what it means, There’s a drone in the row, the
subversive noise of the machines…”

There is one instrumental piece called “Molok”.
It is in this song that it is clear they have classical early prog roots. But they
also show off some intricate musical chops as well.
If you have ever heard Anglagard then you can get some of the dark and moody feel of
this CD. Not that Liquid Scarlet is as dark but the feel, the vibe is very moody. I
guess this CD could be summed up in a line from “One Last Masquerade” and that is
“Me and Death made friends today. He said it’s like a masquerade”.
Buy this CD, you will not be disappointed.
