BLAZING ETERNITY : : REVIEW : :

A World to Drown In (2003) is an expansive, and melancholic work. This is the Danish bands second release. Their first, Times and Unknown Waters came out in 2000. The production is outstanding. All the musical and vocal sounds exist harmoniously in the same space. Each player shares equally in the mellow, somber bliss that is created on this piece. The tracks are placed in an order such that they flow together, one merging into the next. Mesnickow’s calm and smooth voice carries a soothing quality that makes this album a very easy listening experience.

Blazing Eternity

The vibe is mostly somber and melancholy, with a few sparse upbeat moments. The guitar sound on the album is at moments heroic. Riffs that are so wide open blending with the sometimes jazz-like percussive beats make for a pleasant listening experience. There are also some good hard rocking guitar, bass, and drum trade offs as well. Four guest musicians are present throughout various parts of the album, adding vocals (some female), guitar, and keyboards to the mix.

A few of my favorite moments exist on the title track (song 3) which is an eight minute plus true snapshot of the band and their capabilities. Song 6 (Procession) is a beautiful instrumental piece filled with mostly keyboards. Track 7, En Nat Bliver Det Sommer, that is very smooth with a subtle modern feel, and my ultimate favorite the surreal and distant Monument (song 8). Another really cool aspect of the album are the effects that are sprinkled throughout, mostly in the form of male and female spoken word bits that really add intensity to the pieces.

I like it. A World To Drown In is very unique but familiar at the same time. The music opens up wide and expands the universe around you while you are listening. Go buy this and enjoy the expansion of your soul.

8 out of 10.
