WUTHERING HIGHTS Flowing Portraits

A name like Soul Secret probably means they’re progressively heavy. Their sound is metal and they’re technically tight. More importantly, their levels are just right. So there is no need to adjust the equalizer settings for this one.

To tell you the truth, they do borrow from Dream Theater’s coveted stash of Images & Scenes, but do so without getting explicitly cliché. And to be fair, Symphony X, Pain of Salvation, Hourglass and Rush, are all reasonable references to make as well.

Mostly, this is lean adrenaline-pumping contractile tissue. To complement their fleshy tone, there are a number of charismatic segues and passionate solos underlying their mesoderm. They do enough to keep you interested without going into roid rage. If one word were to describe them, it would be “balanced”.

The odd thing is that there are only six songs on this album. It’s practically an even split as four of them range between seven to eight minutes; though there is one solitary epic that lifts twice that load. To offset this freight, it’s preceded by a shorter warm-up rep.

When aligned side-by-side, there really isn’t one that bowls over the others. Then again, I am impartial to the muscle cut because it features girth and hold little fat. So by default, it’s safe to back the meathead. To protect your neck, you should know that the big guy goes by the name of “Tears of Kalliroe” (whatever the heck that means).

Not much else to report aside from the fact that their derivatives do your system justice. I just hope we see more great material from them in future workouts.

8/10
