DAWNING
As a metal head since even before the term was coined, I loved this CD from the
opening notes. I’m sure they are close enough to prog to be “prog metal”, but they
certainly have the metal part down pat.
Really crunchy guitars, good metal vocals
as opposed to the gargling with glass seen in the “darker” reaches of metaldom.
Strong rhythm section with a bass and drum groove that would make every
self-respecting mosh pit metal head happy as a pig in slop.
These guys, while not pushing the
envelope in any way, manage to make each song feel like you are hearing this style
of music for the very first time.
What, for this reviewer, makes or breaks
any CD is the lyrics. As much as I love all instrumental music, it’s lyrics that
really set me off.
These guys are not afraid to question
their own persona here and now, and in the process give us a tiny peek under the
proverbial tent flap as to the goings on in their hearts, minds and souls…
This CD culminates with an epic metal
story song of over twelve minutes called “Years Ago”. This song alone is worth the
price of admission for this CD. Too bad that lovely female vox is not used more
often on this CD.
This CD is a power metal CD very close to
some of the masters in this style of music. I like it!
