ORANGE-ISH BLUE
If you’re looking for that unmistakable sound that is Echolyn, on this first solo
effort from the band’s guitarist, you won’t find it on this recording. But don’t
stop here! This is a fine album. He has written a delightful collection of heart
felt love songs and ballads, some expressing the feeling of a youth’s first love,
some inspired by the literary words of Garrison Keillor
and Hans Christian Andersen, and others explaining the unexplainable feeling
of deepest love for your soul mate.
In listening to the first track, you
think you’re listening to the Beatles / George Harrison reincarnated because it has
that distinct sound. Actually, the whole project reflects the strong influence of
the Beatles on Brett and the gang. And who says the Beatles are dead? Were they not
the pioneers of musical experimentation that started the progressive movement of the
early 70s? Their sound is constantly being incorporated into today’s progressive
music (as in Transatlantic’s latest release, track two, Suite Charlotte Pike).
Track two is a lighthearted, fun ditty
that runs into a pleasant acoustic guitar & strings number. Track four has a neat
mix of different guitar sounds; great key fills from Mr. Buzby and nice backup
vocals from Molly Decker. Track five has excellent vocal harmonies. Track six is a
fast paced jammer, whereas track seven is another Beatle-esque ballad about working
long hours…for what? The money? Track eight is another love ballad, expressing the
deepest love for a soul mate. Track ten is a short rowdy song and track eleven is
another acoustic/string love ballad ending with a bass and drum accompaniment. The
harmony vocals of Molly on a mellow track twelve works well again. Track thirteen is
a little tearjerker to finish the album.
Once again, Brett shows his exceptional
skills as an accomplished lyricist and he’s very competent as a guitarist and
producer. All the musicians on this effort know their stuff. The recording quality
is acceptable for not being a big budget effort. The mix is quite skilled and better
appreciated under headphones. Good job, Brett!
