 Clepsydra:  Alone

Clepsydra has their own unmistakable style and this album is no great departure from that. If anything, the group continues to refine their sound while becoming a main staple within the prog community. This is their fourth release and promises to be their best so far.

Some people argue that Clepsydra never changes their style from album to album. But I have to disagree with them. Their sound is always developing and their music is very intricate and complex. Vocalist Alusio Maggini sings with a very strong European accent, which is what makes the Clepsydra sound unique. If he were to change now, the Clepsydra sound would not be the same.  Lyrically, it is a collection of thoughts that involve life, friendship and family
. It is the type of album you must listen to several times to fully appreciate it’s content. This thought provoking album should be included in your album collection. This is one of their best albums to date.

The Group has been together for 12 years and the current Clepsydra lineup includes group members Alusio Maggini – vocals, Marco Cerulli – guitars, Philip Hubert – keyboards, Nicola De Vita – bass, and Pietro Duca on drums. They have recorded a solid collection of tunes that are very enjoyable to listen to. They are still somewhat too melodic for my taste, but stressing that point won’t change the music. This album is well produced, sounds excellent and is mixed well enough to make you go out and spend your hard earned bucks on it.  If your not completely satisfied with my opinion, then check out sound bytes at the labels/bands website. I’m sure you will like the new release by them.

The album is available in three different covers; the reason the band did this was to send a personal message to everyone. If you were to buy the album you would still get the same CD but you may get a different cover.  The following is a quote from the Clepsydra website, they explain it best in their own words.

“Every cover is unique, just like every being. Every cover is also different, just like every being. Every cover contains the same CD, just like we, same from the inside, very different from the outside, with different lifestyles. The cover was chosen to communicate the sense of isolation with strong symbols - isolation should not be taken as only a negative situation but also as a positive one, a situation where we can also have the chance to take a look at who we are, from the inside”.

This is the authenticity of Clepsydra and where their beliefs are.  We are all the same on the inside but our outer shells are different. We need to look at ourselves and find out who we are as individuals and not judge our brothers by their appearance.  Rather we should learn to live amongst each other as human beings and treat everyone, as we would want to be treated without the prejudices.
