First Aid
:: Coelacanth Ale
This compilation chronicles the Canadian band’s FIRST AID history from the early
beginnings in 1982 through the present day. Scott Jacks is the moving force behind
the band and with this CD they give you a tour down memory lane with this collection
of songs. Even though this group has changed members, and in some cases come back,
the one constant is Scott Jacks. Sixteen tracks comprise the CD, which are best
described as prog with numerous elements thrown in, some neo and classic styles and
some pop elements also. The recording job could be better, but in all fairness most
of the CD was recorded in clubs, which usually aren’t too conducive to getting the
best recording. If your taste in music is more towards the fusion side of prog, this
is right up your alley. The music generally has no boundaries, which I found
enjoyable. Some tracks start off sounding one-way and end in a different place
altogether. They start off as classic prog, like Yes and ELP, and end up as Zappa,
the styles change that much. If not for the sub par production values, this is not a
bad CD.
I give it 6 out of 10 keyboards, not a bad effort from this little known of Canadian
Band.
